By shifting your focus toward what you want in life, you can unlock a world of awesome and attainable possibilities.
Yet, most of us continue to focus on the things we don’t want.
But if that’s you…don’t worry.
You’re not alone.
In this blog post, we’ll explore the benefits of focusing on what you want rather than what you don’t, and how it can help you live your Life, Next Level.
And…if you haven’t, get started with our last post to get caught up on how Positive Focus Will Help You Unleash Your Potential.
Then read on for 8 mind-blowing benefits of creating a positive focus habit.
But first, let’s briefly discuss the detrimental effects of negative focus.
The Path Less Traveled
Most of us continue on our path of focusing on what we don’t want.
And if that’s you, you’re not alone — it’s a terrible habit we’ve all picked up over the years.
It’s how we’re raised…
It’s how society tells us to think…
We negotiate with ourselves for reassurance, so when we walk away from something we don’t feel any real negative consequences. It’s a habit we learn to comfort ourselves and avoid true failure by uttering, “Ah, it’s alright, I knew it wouldn’t work”…
And it’s all just a way to lessen the blow of “failure.”
But, tell me, if that was your thought process while you were “trying” for something, isn’t that a little bit like manifestation?
Aren’t you sort of…manifesting that negative outcome?
If your focus is on failure the entire time, isn’t it inevitably leading you there?
So what should you do?
Shift Your Thinking
The next time you find yourself focusing on the negative, make a shift. Recognizing that it occurs is the first step. And once you do, if you’re similar to me, it’s shocking how frequently we focus on the possible negative results rather than the positive ones.
In our last article, we talked a lot more about the how of positive focus. I want to emphasize the benefits of positive thinking and why it’s worthwhile to make this remarkable change in your life.
Without further ado, here are 8 epic benefits of positive thinking.
1. The Law of Attraction
The Law of Attraction is the principle that like attracts like.
In other words, the energy you put out into the universe will attract similar energy back to you. By focusing on things like debt or illness that you don’t want, you actually attract more of them into your life because you’re putting your energy into them. By focusing on what you want, like abundance or health, you increase your chances of receiving them because your energy is in line with those things.
Honestly, I’m not sure what I think about the Law of Attraction. But what I do believe is that, subconsciously, we are much more likely to push ourselves in the direction of our focus. And much more likely to find what we are focused on, rather than what we aren’t.
Having a positive mindset helps us notice opportunities we might not see otherwise and connect with like-minded people who share the same goals. Let’s discuss further in this article.
Remember: Where the focus goes, our energy flows.
2. Positive Mindset and Building a Virtuous Cycle
Focusing on what you want can also help cultivate a positive mindset.
Stepping out of my comfort zone and pursuing something bigger than myself brings happiness, better social connections, and improved outcomes when I have a positive mindset. Even when I’m still on the journey and not to the destination.
But when you’re constantly thinking about what you don’t want, it’s easy to become stressed, sad, and upset, which fills you with anxiety and self-doubt.
Which spirals you into more self-doubt, and even worse results — a vicious cycle.
Focusing on what you want creates a positive loop of thoughts and emotions, lifting your mood.
And that’s a cycle you do want to be in — a virtuous cycle.
It’s a cycle, either way, it’s up to YOU on whether that’s going to be a vicious cycle or a virtuous cycle.
If you want all of your energy to be focused on the negative, then by all means. But the outcome probably won’t be what you want, and you won’t have fun on the journey.
3. Clarity on Your Vision
Focusing on what you want also helps bring clarity into your life. When your attention is scattered across a range of negative scenarios or outcomes that may never happen, it can be difficult to make decisions or take action toward your goals.
But, by identifying exactly what it is that you want and keeping that vision at the forefront of your mind, everything becomes clearer and simpler.
Think about this: Whatever we’re focusing on, it’s a range of possible outcomes that haven’t even happened yet. So why not focus on the positive and have more fun taking action towards your goals and visions, with absolute clarity and focus?
Start building that virtuous cycle.
4. Build Your Motivation Muscle
Focusing positively on our life goals, like financial independence or a fulfilling career, motivates us to work towards achieving them.
This motivation comes from a sense of purpose and an understanding of why we want these things in our lives.
And the drive and want to get there.
One of the most demotivating things you can go through is to allow negativity to take over your thought cycle.
It’s why depressed people sit on the couch all night, lay in bed all day, and disassociate from their friends and family.
They lack motivation, even to take care of themselves or have dinner with their friends.
I’ve been there (as I’ve discussed deeply), have you? I bet you’ve at least felt yourself starting to go down that path when life throws an unexpected curveball at you…
5. Find Your Perfect Opportunity
When we focus on what we do want, we open ourselves up to opportunities that align with those desires.
For example, if you focus on finding a satisfying career instead of avoiding a bad job, you will be more likely to see job postings or networking opportunities that align with your goals.
The same goes for opportunities of friendship, love, career, and anything else you can think of.
To find the perfect opportunity in any area, focus on the positive and what you want. If you are not focused on the right things, you may miss out on those opportunities without realizing it.
6. Meaningful Connections
Piggybacking off of #5, focusing on what you want also helps form deeper connections with others who share similar goals and aspirations.
Focusing on positive outcomes and personal growth makes it easier to attract supportive and encouraging like-minded individuals.
This can surround you with the right people in your life to encourage and help you get to where you want and need to be.
But oftentimes we surround ourselves with people who do just the opposite.
Sometimes, to get to where you want to be in life, you have to make difficult decisions.
7. That Gratitude
When I was going through the worst times in my life, one of the best things I did was start a gratitude journal.
Focusing on what you want, rather than what you don’t want, helps you appreciate and feel grateful for the things in your life that align with your desires.
This gratitude helps reinforce positive thoughts and emotions while also keeping you grounded in the present moment.
It also helps you to stay your happy and smiling self along the way, no matter the roadblocks or setbacks you encounter.
Grateful people are those who always have a smile on their face, buy the person behind them a coffee, and are always there to help others.
We should all cultivate an attitude of gratitude.
8. Don’t Worry – Be Happy (All the Time)
Finally, focusing on what you do want brings joy into your life as you move closer to your vision of the future.
This joy comes from a sense of purpose, progress, and personal growth as you overcome obstacles and reach new milestones.
If you’re not experiencing joy in your life, even if you’re not where you want to be yet, you should take a look at your life. We’re only here for a short time, and if we’re not enjoying it, what the hell are we even doing?
If you can focus on enjoying the journey, then you’ve already won.
